Is Islam Compatible With American Society?

Over the last four centuries, America has risen from fledgling settlements on the coast of a vast and wild wilderness to becoming the most successful civilization in world history. This unprecedented rise could never have happened, however, if America had not been constructed on powerful virtues and ideas. [1] The worldview that created the life we now enjoy in contemporary America, however, is being attacked by an aggressive new threat. It is an old enemy that has taken new form. This ancient foe failed to defeat us head to head; but, like wolves in sheep's clothing it is now trying to attack us from within. By exploiting our social weaknesses, multiculturalism and political correctness, Islam has infiltrated our society almost unnoticed. Under the guise of peaceful motives, Islam seeks to weaken and ultimately destroy the virtues that made us strong. It hopes to replace them with retrograde Islamic thought. It seeks to portray itself as just another element of the great American melting pot. [2] The truth, however, is that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with the American way of life. If accepted, Islam would inevitably change us. Some may find it difficult to believe that a prominent world religion constitutes an acute threat, but a familiarity with the religion's historical origins, recent history, and core beliefs demonstrates that it is fundamentally incompatible with American society. 

Mohamed's Controversial Life 

We should explore a religion's source before passing judgment on it. Fallen man operating over time can warp the truth, so we should measure Islam at its origin. We need to go back 1,400 years to Islam's founder in order to discover its essence. The founder of Islam was a desert dweller named Mohamed who occasionally meditated in a desert cave. In AD 610 he claimed to have received a revelation from the angel Gabriel which began his career as a prophet and the subsequent creation of the Koran. Muslims consider Mohamed to be the perfect example of what a follower of Islam should be. [3] However, from an Western perspective, Mohamed's life was far from clean, and parts of it were characterized by dishonesty, violence, and seemingly perverted desires. All Muslims derive inspiration from Mohamed, but almost all modern Americans would cringe at many aspects of his life.

Child sex abusers are considered the lowest form of criminal. Even in prison they are regarded as the lowest in the hierarchy and often subjected to severe beatings. [4] Most modern Americans would regard Mohamed as a pedophile. At the age of 51 he married a nine year old girl named Ayesha (or "Aisha"). [5] This marriage is among the most historically reliable events in Mohamed's life. There is testimony from Ayesha herself, her father, and contemporary historians. However, even those who already know about this part of Mohamed's life are often unfamiliar with another scandalous aspect of it. Ayesha was Mohamed's niece, and he was not allowed to marry her. Mohamed had to receive a revelation from Allah in order to bypass the regulation. This was recorded by Ayesha's father in Sahih Bukhari 7.18: "The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said 'But I am your brother.' The Prophet said, 'You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry.'" Mohamed thus violated established regulations to marry Ayesha. However, in Sahih Bukhari volume 7, book 62, number 37 he cited this very same regulation as making it impossible for him to marry a women he was not attracted to: "It was said to the Prophet, 'Won't you marry the daughter of Hamza?' He said, 'She is my foster niece (brother's daughter).'" Mohamed's rejection of Hamza's daughter seems to demonstrate a certain dishonesty in his character. The most disconcerting aspect of this from an American perspective, however, is the pedophiliac tendencies of what appears to have been a powerful older man preying on a female child. 

The Jewish people have their own complaints against Mohamed. There are sections of the Koran (or "Quran") in which Mohamed made what would today be considered antisemitic attacks. [6] Worse, however, was that he targeted Jews during his conquests. In a particularly disturbing incident, Mohamed personally massacred the entire Banu Qurayza tribe that once lived in Medina. [7] In AD 627, Mohamed allegedly received a revelation from Gabriel instructing him to invade the Quarayza's territory and lay siege to their city. He claimed this was because the Quarayza tribe had not aided him during his campaign against another local group, but the Jewish tribe had allegedly withheld support because they were offended by some of his anti-Jewish rhetoric. The tribe quickly surrendered because they knew they could not defeat him. Mohamed then had a mass grave dug in Medina's market place. Ibn Ishaq (Mohamed's biographer) described the incident: "[Mohamed] sent for them and struck off their heads in those trenches as they were brought out to him in batches. Among them was the enemy of Allah Huyayy b. Akhtab and Ka'b b. Asad their chief. There were 600 or 700 in all, though some put the figure as high as 800 or 900… This went on until the apostle made an end of them." After killing the men, Mohamed ordered the women and children distributed as slaves and concubines among his warriors. He took one of the widows for himself along with a fifth of the loot. [8] What makes this account particularly disturbing is that Mohamed apparently served personally as the lead executioner before taking his pile of plunder. 

The majority of history's religious leaders have preached peace, but Mohamed was a warlord who both endorsed the violent conquest of unbelievers and personally pursued the policy. By AD 632, the "Apostle" of Islam and his Muslim followers had conquered the entire Arabian Peninsula. [9] Mohamed ordered the conquests and personally led his forces into battle. He conquered the cities of Medina and Mecca conducting caravan raids that eventually forced the various tribes of the peninsula to submit to him for economic reasons. These conquests led to thousands of casualties and revealed something disturbing about Mohamed's character. Among the most horrifying episodes occurred when Mohamed authorized the rape of conquered women in front of their husbands:

"The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur'anic verse: (Sura 4:24) 'And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess.'"

This event was recorded by one of Mohamed's companions named Abu Sai'd al-Khudri in his record (Abu Dawud volume 2, number 2150, page 577). Why would a great religious leader indulge the basest lusts of his men in such a horrible way?

Mohamed was Islam's founder and prophet, and yet his life was highly controversial from an American perspective. He appears to have had pedophile tendencies and acted upon them when he married his nine year old niece Ayesha. He is regarded by Jews as having been antisemitic and genocidal. He became a warlord who participated in many bloody conquests and the mass rape of conquered women. He profited exorbitantly from this violence and routinely took twenty percent of the war loot for himself. Muslims often defend Mohamed from these accusations by pointing out that the seventh century Arabian world cannot be judged by twenty first century American moral standards, but with a billion and half modern Muslims looking back to Mohamed as a source of divine inspiration it remains to be proven that Islam will not import a seventh century worldview into America. [10] How can we believe that Islam will forever reject the example of its founder? 

Islam's Recent History  

A biography of Islam's founder reveals his religion's origin to be filled with values and behaviors deeply at odds with the American way of life. However, some claim Islam cannot be judged today by looking back at what it was 1,400 years ago in medieval times. However, it is not hard to survey much of Islam's modern history without coming to the conclusion that it remains similar to Mohamed's original faith. 

Autocracy & Free Speech 

Mohamed embodied an autocratic style of leadership. His commands were not the product of consensus or discussion, they possessed legitimacy because Mohamed claimed divine inspiration. His will was legislated through communication with Allah. More than a few convenient revelations appeared precisely to fulfill Mohamed's specific desires. [11] Mohamed demanded that no one speak against him because he was the "Prophet of Allah." This autocratic personality has been transferred to his modern followers. Around the world, Muslims are among the most vocal and violent critics of free speech. Insults directed towards Islam or its prophet are punishable by death in most Islamic states. Americans believe that the right to free speech is among the most essential human rights, and we have enshrined it in our Bill of Rights. If Islam gains significant power in America than our right to free speech will likely be lost as anti-blasphemy laws will be introduced to protect what Islam holds valuable. 

The evidence for this prediction is abundant, and finding it is as simple as searching the internet with the words "Muslim free speech." The available sources include numerous news articles about Muslim groups attempting to sue people for saying negative things about Islam and interviews in which Muslims denounce free speech. Among the most famous examples of Islam's rejection of free speech was an incident that began when the Danish newspaper 'Jyllands-Posten' printed several cartoons depicting Mohamed. The newspaper said the cartoons were published as a way to further dialogue on self-censorship and free speech. The message did not resonate in the Muslim world, however, and riots soon broke out around the Middle East. The Danish, Norwegian, and German embassies were set on fire as thousands violently took to the streets. [12] The Danish embassy in Pakistan was bombed following the incident. Over 100 people died in the Islamic "cartoon crisis." [13] The rioter's reactions to the cartoons seem insane to civilized people, but they demonstrated the way in which many Muslims are still trapped in the seventh century with their founder.

The Danish cartoon crisis was far from the first incident of Islamic opposition to free speech in Europe. Just a year before, Vincent Van Gogh's grandson Theo was brutally murdered as he bicycled to work on the morning of November 2. The murderer was a Moroccan Muslim who was offended by Theo's film 'Submission' because it graphically described the way women are treated in Islam. The killer shot the film maker eight times before trying to decapitate him. He then attached a five page note to the corpse by impaling a knife into Theo's chest. [14] The note was filled with racist comments against Jews and threats made to the ex-Muslim woman who helped Theo produce 'Submission.' The note included a prediction of what would eventually happen to everyone who rejected Islam: "A Day of horrible tortures and painful tribulations which will go together with the terrible cries being pressed out of the lungs of the unjust." [15] The rambling note included several references to how the Jews were allegedly inciting hatred against Muslims. It may be tempting to dismiss this Muslim as a lone wolf radical, but it was later discovered he was part of a terrorist cell arrested shortly after the incident. The killing's fallout included Islamic bombings of European churches. [16] 

Every year, protests erupt in the Middle East that include the burning of the American flag. This activity seems to characterize every Islamic mob shown on television. Americans, and the West in general, respect people's right to burn our flag as an expression of free speech. However, many followers of Islam reject this kind of toleration. In 2010, Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center declared September 11 to be "International Burn a Koran Day." He said he would inaugurate it by burning 200 Korans and commemorating the victims who died in New York and Pennsylvania. Jones' message incited rage across the Muslim world. With no way to attack Pastor Jones himself, Middle Eastern mobs decided to kill innocent people and destroy property. Thousands of Muslims across the Middle East took to the streets and attacked military bases while hurling rocks. Twenty people were dead and countless others injured before Jones ever burned a single Koran. [17] Jones was eventually pressured to call off his September 11 stunt, but he did later burn a Koran during a mock trial which once again set off a string of global violence. In a related incident, Muslims stormed the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan after hearing an inflammatory speech delivered by their religious leader. The mob butchered 12 people including Norwegian and Swedish nationals who had arrived to help the Afghan people. [18] The rioters decapitated two of these innocent people during the bloody frenzy. All this international carnage was caused by outrage over a book being burned thousands of miles away on another continent. Americans have been appalled by this senseless loss of life. 

Islam's Treatment of Women 

Western women are valued, and they have been given equal rights with men. Western women are educated alongside men and given the same opportunities to achieve their individual goals. However, Islamic women are treated much differently. [19] Millions of Islamic women worldwide live out their days in what Westerners would consider oppressive male dominated conditions. Many have argued that Islam can become a "progressive" religion, but the Islamic world's recent behavior and holy texts suggest Western concepts of sexual equality are totally absent from Islamic thought. [20] 

The most visible symbol of the subjugation of Islamic women is the head covering they are compelled to wear. In recent years, moderate Muslims have argued that the head covering ("hijab") was not a part of original Muslim doctrine. However, there is little evidence supporting this, and the Koran commands it. Surah 24:31 reads:

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex"

This surah also suggests how Islam perceives women as subservient to male family members. Surah 4:34 reads: "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women)." Mohamed said that women should be subservient to men because men exceled over them and spent money to provide for them.

Beating or abusing a woman is among the worst sins in the Western world. For at least a millennia, women have been respected and defended by gentlemen. However, Islam does not share the Western perspective. Mohamed advised men on dealing with a rebellious wife in Surah 4:34: "As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them." According to Mohamed, women should be beaten if they will not submit for other reasons. In the Hadith (7:715), a man's wife approached Ayesha, Mohamed's pre-pubescent wife, and complained that her husband beat her. After the woman revealed a terrible bruise, Ayesha went to Mohamed and reported: "I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Her skin is greener than her clothes!" Mohamed decided to formally address the case, but he refused to rule against the husband and chose to condemn the battered woman for claiming her husband was impotent. Ayesha's words reveal that domestic abuse was more common within the Islamic community than outside it. There was a link between Islam and the abuse of women from the very beginning. 

The precedent set by Mohamed, and interpreted by many Muslims as an endorsement of wife beating, is sadly still accepted today. The practice of honor killing is common in the Islamic world. There are many horrendous incidents of women and girls being killed by their own family members in an effort to protect "family honor." These have been happening since Mohamed's lifetime. In Punjab, India, alone, there were well over 200 cases of honor killings in 2001, and likely many more that were never prosecuted. [21] In some regions, less than 20 percent of honor killings are ever taken to court. It would be a mistake, however, to assume that these kinds of killings are limited to backward caves in the Middle East. There are a growing number of such atrocities taking place among Muslims in America. In 2008, two Texas girls named Amina and Sarah Said (18 and 17 years old) were shot dead by their Muslim immigrant father in the back of his taxi. The two girls committed the crime of wanting to integrate into American society. The girl's friends described the cultural battles between the girls and their father. Their father opposed their clothing style, participation in high school sports, and dating non-Muslims. Their "infidel" friends described them as extremely smart, gentle, cheerful, and just wanting to live a normal life. [22] Tragic stories like that of Amina and Sarah are not all that uncommon, and these practices do not die as one might hope just because immigrants arrive in America. These practices are deeply rooted in Islamic teaching. 

Sharia Law 

Most people rightly think of Islam as a religion, but what few understand is that it is unlike Christianity, Wicca, or Buddhism (which focus on improving people's souls). Islam has a political agenda. Unlike Christianity, which endorses no political system and encourages Christians to live peacefully under authority, Islam has its own legal code that must be followed by all societies into which it moves. There is no separation of mosque and state in Islam. If the Islamic religion is allowed to thrive in America its members will fight to displace our republic's noble concepts. The legal code presented by the Koran and Mohamed's life are collectively known as "Sharia Law," and its implementation in America would mark the end of our unique way of life.  

Islam has attempted to force entire populations to accept Sharia wherever it has gone, and it forcibly imported Sharia during its medieval conquests. Today, states like Saudi Arabia and Iran still uphold Sharia Law in their judicial proceedings. [23] The more Islamic immigrants come to the West the more they have insisted on being judged exclusively by Sharia rather than Western legal systems. They have succeeded in pushing this agenda so well that by June of 2009 Great Britain had authorized 85 Sharia courts to operate in its territory. The decisions of these Islamic tribunals have been granted full legal status by the national courts. The number of Sharia courts in Great Britain has grown significantly in recent years and shows no signs of stopping. In 2008, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said in an interview with BBC news that the adoption of some parts of Sharia Law in Britain was "unavoidable." [25] This system of laws, however, is highly unsuitable for American and Western society, and it is important that we understand how it would impact our lives.

Firstly, Sharia Law demands that non-Muslims living under Islamic dominated governments must pay a tax call the "jizyah." Mohamed explained the jizyah in Surah 9:29: "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." The jizyah is a tax levied against non-Muslims. It is one way Muslims pressure those they have conquered to convert to Islam, but it is also a form of tribute in which the payer admits he is under Islamic rule. If Sharia Law was implemented in America then all Christians would be forced to pay extra taxes to the Muslim community simply for existing. 

Among the most basic changes to occur in American society if Sharia Law were implemented would be an end to gambling and the consumption of alcohol and pork products (Koran 5:3). Although many Americans do not agree with gambling and the consumption of alcoholic beverages, we respect the rights of others to participate in those things. It is unlikely that any American, however, would accept a blanket ban against all pork products. This food law would violate numerous aspects of our daily lives and traditional culture.

Music is sin in Islam. Unknown to most Westerners, music is forbidden in the Muslim religion.  There is some dispute among Islamic scholars about exactly when music is sin and what kinds of music are sin, but there is almost no dispute among serious Muslims that modern forms of music, like pop and rock, are sinful. Music is understood to be sinful even among the majority of Islamic youth (despite most of them choosing to violate their religion's commands on the topic). I have personally been sent multiple Islamic motivational videos aimed as young men which specifically mention listening to music as a practice they need to give up for Allah. Almost all Americans would utterly reject the idea of banning music, and yet the growing influence of Islam in our country suggests this is a distinct possibility in certain future locations.

Five times a day, Muslims are told to kneel and pray facing the direction of Mecca. The "call to prayer" is blasted across loud speakers and the voice of the "muezzin" echoes from every mosque and minaret across the Islamic world. Muslims stop working during these appointed times. Certain cities in Michigan already have mosques that follow the Middle Eastern pattern of blaring the call to prayer over loudspeakers. The institutions of Sharia practices in America would require that five times a day every mosque across the country would inflict "noise pollution" on their communities. Traffic would stop, lessons would cease, and business would be postponed. 

Sharia Law also advocates the very anti-Western practice of polygamy. Polygamy seems natural within a male dominated society, but it violates America's national character which has long rejected the practice. America forced the nineteenth century Mormons to reject polygamy in order for Utah to be accepted into the Union as a state. Under Sharia Law, however, a man can take as many as four wives, but most Americans would regard this as a further erosion of our family structure and social fabric. 

In 2009, a seventeen year old Ohio girl named Rifqa Bary was forced to flee her home after converting to Christianity. She believed her father wanted to kill her after she rejected Islam. She ran to Florida to escape her parent's wrath. [28] Most people hear about situations like this and dismiss them as cases of overly controlling parents, but it is important to understand that an Islamic father's desire to kill his apostate child is rooted in a Sharia Law statute that requires the death penalty for ex-Muslims. Mohamed clearly stated that the penalty for apostatizing was death: "The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah and that I am His Apostle, cannot be shed except in three cases: In Qisas for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate) and leaves the Muslims" (Hadith, Bukhari 9:83:17). Miss Bary had a well founded reason to believe her father might hurt her. Islam's mandate, however, is in total violation of American values and the rights of personal conscience.  

Most Muslims Reject American & Its Values 

Finally, Islam's incompatibility with American society is part of its identity. Over a thousand years ago, Mohamed laid the groundwork for animosity with the West by telling his followers in Surah 5:51: "Believers, take not Jews or Christians for your friends." That message has been carried forward by Mohamedans like Anjem Choudary, a prominent UK Muslim leader. Choudary claimed that the "the final hour will not come until Muslims conquer the White House." [29] The Islamic title of "Grand Ayatollah" is a rare and special one given only to those revered by the masses. It is disturbing, then, to hear Grand Ayatollah Khomeini saying things like: "Kill all the unbelievers! Just as they would kill you all!" and "Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter their armies!" and "Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless." But it is not just the leaders of the Islamic world who hate us, it is often the people themselves. In a 2008 poll conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, it was found that 83 percent of the population held an unfavorable view of the United States. [30] In a 2002 poll, following the September 11 attacks, an average of nine Muslim countries found that 93 percent of the Arab world's population would describe the United States as "ruthless and arrogant." [31] How can we believe that a religion whose followers are so strongly against us is compatible with our society?

Some would like to claim that most modern Muslims do not endorse the values and behaviors of their founding figure or holy book, but there is significant statistical evidence to suggest this is delusional. A recent poll taken in Indonesia, for example, revealed that ten percent of that nation's people endorsed violent holy war (or literal "jihad"). [32] This means that 19 million Muslims support terrorism in one of the most mild of Islamic countries. In Egypt, it was found that 87 percent of the population agreed with applying strict Sharia Law in all Islamic countries. [33] In Turkey, only nine percent of the population believes Arabs carried out the September 11 attacks in New York. [34] Perhaps more disturbing, however, is that 49 percent of Muslims in America see themselves as "Muslim" instead of "American." [35] The numbers suggest that half of Muslim-Americans believe Islam is fundamentally incompatible with American society. 

Conclusion 

Islam is fundamentally at odds with the Western world, and it is incompatible with American society. From its birth in the Arabian sands, it has pursued domination by violence, it has repressed the kind of free speech Americans have long valued, it has advocated abusive treatment towards women, and it seeks to replace our legal system with Sharia Law. Islam is therefore incompatible with American society, and current trends suggest this incompatibility is accelerating and intensifying into a clash of civilizations.
